Save the date! Let’s Go Shopping 5 brings new things for spring!

Back by popular demand, Let’s Go Shopping, the all-day, online, accessible, virtual mall crawl is back. And “by popular demand” is not an exaggeration, as more than a few inquiries about the future of the event prompted me to do some social media polling, and to my surprise, the demand was there.

This was surprising because upon the conclusion of the holiday Let’s Go Shopping event last year, I conveyed to both attendees and participating vendors that I felt the idea had run its course, that it was timely and needed during the pandemic quarantine and restricted travel periods, but that once vaccination rollout had begun, this type of event would be rendered obsolete. I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to shop from home when the whole world was out there, waiting for us all to burst from our hidey holes, with wads of unspent cash gripped tightly in our fists, ready to shop, dine, drink, and travel the world. As it turns out, the early delays in getting those inoculations created a backlog that required some events, such as conventions, to continue to schedule virtual meetings. Further, with the tiered system of vaccinations, not everyone has yet received both doses, or for whatever reason may not be vaccinated at all, so there is still a significant group who wanted an opportunity to shop virtually.

I quickly inquired of my best vendors how they felt about presenting another event, and they were all enthusiastic. So, Let’s Go Shopping 5, focusing on fresh new things for Spring, will be held on Saturday, April 10, 2021, from 8AM Pacific Time to 5PM Pacific Time.

Ready for a little retail therapy? Let’s Go Shopping!

Let’s Go Shopping 3: Back to School, and a Holiday 2020 Preview

Almost six months ago, I found myself fretting over the number of industries that were quickly becoming threatened by the need to “stay home to slow the spread,” due to the mandatory quarantines imposed in many US states. As I followed the negotiations taking place in Congress, and the decisions that were made as to which industries would receive the proposed billions in an effort to keep the economy afloat, I grew concerned about the fate of some of my friends, owners of micro businesses, those very small, home-based, sole proprietorships that are the only means of support for many entrepreneurs I knew. I began to wonder, as was the case the last time Congress passed a bail-out package during a time of national hardship, if people with disabilities were going to be left out.

Further, upon learning of the regulations passed as to which small businesses would be eligible for the Payroll Protection Plan, I realized that many of the entrepreneurs I knew personally would not qualify, as they either ran a one person operation, or had few employees who worked part-time, or as independent contractors. Would micro businesses be passed over? What about business owners with disabilities? Would they be eligible to receive the stimulus checks that were dispersed to families? It occurred to me that a segment of the population about which I care deeply might be in trouble if the so-called “Cares Act” didn’t much care for them. I decided to do something about it.

The best way I could think of to give entrepreneurs with disabilities a fighting chance was to find a way to help them increase sales. Without knowing for sure whether or not everyone was going to receive a stimulus check, I wanted to create a program that might be somewhat more sustainable that a $1200 gone-in-a-flash payment, even if a check were distributed to everyone.

The result was an experiment I called Let’s Go Shopping. The idea was to assist small businesses to gain exposure to new customers, while exposing customers to a fun and unique way to shop a variety of businesses, all in one place, all without leaving their home. Creating a virtual shopping mall seemed infinitely less cumbersome for a small business owner than flying to a distant city to exhibit at a conference, with the requisite hotel stay and associated expenses, or applying for a business loan, or spending grueling hours working a trade show floor, which wasn’t possible during the Corona virus pandemic, anyway.

And what of the shoppers who could no longer go out? The ones who lacked a solid Internet connection, or who did not have a multiplicity of online access, due to children and/or spouse working from home? What about people who still wanted to send gifts, but who felt overwhelmed by the cognitive burden of online shopping, and who were frustrated about not being able to be part of upcoming graduation ceremonies, Easter gatherings, or Mother’s Day? Lockdown affected everyone differently, and as usual, I saw no one addressing the needs of the most vulnerable among us, people with disabilities, not-so-tech-savvy seniors, people with underlying health conditions, people stuck at home, with limited options. How could I connect small businesses with the customers who needed them?

The Let’s Go Shopping model is an online, accessible, virtual mall where anyone with a PC, laptop, smartphone, or even an old-school landline telephone can connect, via Zoom, to a variety of small businesses, just like in any real-world shopping mall. The first event was multiple hours, the second was multiple days, and the third will be the best yet.

Join us Friday, September 4th and Saturday, September 5th from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM Pacific, 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern Time for Let’s Go Shopping 3 – Back to School and Holiday Gift Preview.

Want to start your holiday shopping early? Looking for unique fall decor
for your home? Want to get ready for the new school year in
style? We’ll have tech gadgets and guide dog gear, apparel and accessories, food, art, jewelry, and personalized gifts. We’ll even have help for remote workers setting up home offices, or for parents who need to set up home-schooling or distance learning stations. Expect a
fantastic mix of small businesses to explore, whether shopping for yourself, your
kids, or for fall and winter 2020.  Let’s Go Shopping is a virtual mall like no
other, so grab your gift list and your phone, and Zoom in to our 2-day
event!

Get the Zoom virtual shopping mall invitation by subscribing to our announce list. You can send a blank email to:

lgs+subscribe@groups.io

or go to:

groups.io/g/LGS

Please share the news with your own network! Don’t forget to use the tag, #LetsGoShopping when tweeting about the event. Can’t get to the mall? No problem. We’ll bring the mall to you. Best of all, no mask needed!

No org affiliation? No problem! An invitation to a stylish virtual boutique.

No matter which blindness advocacy organization’s name is printed on your membership card, there’s been a little something for everyone at the summer national conventions. this year, due to the pandemic crisis, our lives seem to have moved online. So has our conference-going. As was the case for many of you, I had planned to attend a number of conferences in person this year, and one by one, they all dropped back and punted to the player on the other team, Zoom.

By this time any other year, I would be exhibiting my Elegant Insights Braille Creations, greeting many of you in person, shaking your hand, introducing you to whomever was working the exhibit hall booth with me, showing you my pretty merchandise, and thanking you for stopping by. Instead, I’m offering my products virtually, via the conference platform chosen by the NFB for their online sessions and hoping you’ll select the link that will deposit you in my Zoom room.

While registered attendees are strongly encouraged to attend the general, educational, and affiliate sessions, the vendors who would typically have exhibit hall hours that did not conflict with the convention agenda would be eagerly awaiting the arrival of the conference attendees, hoping to make some sales. In the case of the convention of the American Council for the Blind, the “exhibit hall” was actually a series of recorded infomercial’s where blind business owners could present everything they possibly could in the span of ten minutes. These recorded presentations were then played on ACB Radio. The NFB invested in an elaborate conference platform, where sessions could be attended virtually, while exhibit hall hours were scheduled throughout the week.

After two days of presenting my products to a mostly empty room, surprising considering the trumpeted number of registered attendees, it has occurred to me that there is no reason to limit my audience to the NFB audience. Anyone can connect to a Zoom room, so I’d like to invite all-comers to a couple of sessions at which I’ll be talking about my products, answering questions, and hopefully, meeting the customers that I’m missing by adhering to the limits of the convention exhibit hall hours.

Copy and paste the link below into your browser to join our virtual booth via Zoom:

On Thursday, July 16, Friday, July 17, and Saturday July 18, I will be available during the NFB20 exhibit hall hours as follows:

Thursday
6AM to 8AM Pacific Time, 9AM to 11AM Eastern: I’ve got a couple of announcements I’m excited to share, including some great new products, as well as big news about a new direction for Elegant Insights.

Friday
6AM to 8AM Pacific Time, 9AM to 11AM Eastern: We’ll be talking about gifts, gifts, and more gifts. Hey, it’s never too early to start holiday shopping. Think of it as Christmas in July.

Friday
2PM to 4PM Pacific Time, 5PM to 7PM Eastern: Catch up on everything you’ve missed with Elegant Insights, and get your product questions answered. You may even win a gift of braille jewelry! Did somebody say prize drawing?

Saturday
6AM to 9AM Pacific Time, 9AM to noon Eastern: Am I really hitting the Zoom room at 6AM? Yes I am. On Saturday, I’ll be joined by Brent Harbolt from The Harbolt Company, and we’re just going to chat about the convention, check in with our customers about the best sessions, compare notes on how tired we are, and generally shoot the breeze.

Saturday
3PM to 5PM Pacific Time, 6PM to 8PM Eastern: Busy this Saturday night? After a long week working, social distancing, or conventioneering, zoom in to a session that’s all about fashion, fragrance, and fabulous. Laura and Brent invite you to join our Saturday Night Style event, where we’ll chat about apparel and accessories, fragrance and skin care, trends, and bath and beauty products for both men and women. Brent, Laura, and a mixed panel of fashionistas will answer your burning style questions. Need a heads-up about men’s grooming products? Summer trends? Color cosmetics? Hottest men’s fragrances? Ways to wear jewelry and accessories while wearing a mask? Okay, maybe not that last one, but whatever you want to know, we’re here to rescue you from any style emergency.

Whether you have an upcoming job interview, special event, or just want to look your best in all those Zoom meetings, join us from 6 PM to 8 PM Eastern Time, 3PM to 5 PM Pacific for Saturday Night Style. Here is your Zoom invitation:

Let’s Go Shopping and win door prizes too!

In case you haven’t heard, there’s this little event happening online tomorrow. It’s a virtual mall crawl! We invite you to attend via the Zoom video conferencing platform.

Zoom Meeting ID: 287180525

Let’s Go Shopping is an online, accessible, virtual event for small businesses and the customers who need them. You’ll find gifts for Mother’s Day, graduations, or just to gift a friend a lift. Oh, and did I mention door prizes? There’s going to be door prizes!

Below is a list of the vendors who will be offering door prizes, and a brief description of each. Some of the business owners are giving them away during their session, others are giving them out at the end of the day. You do not have to be present to win the door prizes at end of day, although you do have to attend the session in which the vendor him or herself will be awarding them. We will simply be choosing random numbers between 1 and however many attendees are in the session. We’ll ask our Siri or Alexa or whichever virtual personal assistant we’re using to pick the number. Not very sophisticated, but I guess it’s a bit better than game dice. Maybe not that much better.

For immediate release – An online, accessible event: Let’s Go Shopping!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 30, 2020

Stuck at home? Let’s Go Shopping! Attend this online event that brings together small businesses and the customers who need them.

Henderson, NV – Laura Legendary, owner of Elegant Insights Braille Creations, has organized an all-day, online accessible experience for seniors and consumers with disabilities called “Let’s Go Shopping!” On Saturday, April 4th, from 7 AM PT to 7 PM PT, shoppers will be able to call or connect to the Zoom platform to shop for gifts for Easter, Passover, Mother’s Day, graduations, or any upcoming gift-giving occasion. With millions of people in self-isolation, getting out to shop is all but impossible for those with limited mobility.

People with disabilities, seniors, and those in rural areas with limited bandwidth or lack of access to help from their children, in-home health care provider, or personal assistant may find navigating web sites to go shopping online difficult. “People with print or cognitive disabilities who would normally have access to assistive technology through their workplace, or a care worker who they rely on to accomplish shopping tasks may now find themselves cut off, thanks to the need to remain at home. As a result, they may find online shopping to be cognitively burdensome,” says Legendary. “My goal with the Let’s Go Shopping event was two-fold: Not only to give micro businesses a boost, but to bring a virtual shopping mall to customers,” says Legendary, who is blind. “Besides, we could all use a little retail therapy about now.”

Attendees will access the live online mall using the Zoom Video Conferencing platform. Zoom has been a lifesaver for students and parents who need to connect with teachers and colleagues. Zoom enables users to sign in using a desktop, laptop, smartphone app, or even their landline telephone. Brent Harbolt, of The Harbolt Company, one of the participating vendors, has donated the Zoom room for the event. “Let’s Go Shopping is an opportunity for me to reach new customers who are looking for gadgets to make their life a little easier, provide product descriptions, and directly answer people’s questions in real time,” says Harbolt.

All of the small business owners participating in the “Let’s Go Shopping” event have a disability. Vendors include A T Guys, PattiandRicky.com, GuideLights and Gadgets Inc., Elegant Insights Braille Creations, Hartgen Consultancy, and more. Shoppers will be able to purchase artisan crafted dolls, home fragrance and beauty products, independent living aids, adaptive apparel and accessories, ceramics, and braille jewelry.

Elegant Insights Braille Creations is a distinctive, handcrafted collection of jewelry and accessories, made in the USA, and embossed in braille. Founded in 2011 by Laura Legendary, Elegant Insights jewelry is meaningful, unusual, accessible, and inclusive. We bring out the beauty of braille.

Zoom in on this follow-up: Keyboard shortcuts

After sharing my experience with the Zoom video conferencing platform in a blog post last week, many of my readers had questions. So, I will continue to post on the subject with what I hope will be helpful tips and updates. The first of these follow-ups is to post the list of keyboard shortcuts that are useful when using Zoom with keyboard navigation for Windows or Mac. The list is not hidden by any means, but it isn’t in a really obvious spot in the control panel, either. Just clip out the list below and stash it someplace it will be easy for you to find and refer to later. After all, unless you plan to conduct video conferences or screen sharing on a daily basis, most of us won’t use Zoom often enough to memorize the list of hotkey’s, and interrupting your workflow while you search for the keyboard shortcut list will be frustrating. Please also note the prerequisites:

At long last, an accessible screen sharing solution: Zoom

By the time you read to the end of this post, if you are a screen reader user, your employability potential could be vastly improved. At long last, there is an accessible screen sharing platform that can make the difference between participating in mainstream work, running a remote demonstration independently, leading a video conference, or giving an online presentation, without sighted assistance. What’s more, this is not a work-around. It’s cutting edge, elegant, and best of all…mainstream technology.

One of the most frustrating aspects of the pervasive unemployment situation in the blindness community has been the inability to access some of the most commonly used technology that is standard in many businesses around the world: Screen sharing. the most widely-used platforms, referred to by names such as Go To My PC, along with Go To Webinar and Go To Meeting iterations, Web X, Log Me In, and others, have long been inaccessible for screen reader users. If you have ever found yourself forced to reject a job opportunity, or being forcibly excluded from one, simply because you cannot use this type of technology, you are not alone. Years ago, I had to leave a lucrative position because the job duties included the implementation of a screen sharing program, and I was no longer able to do the work. There was no accessible solution, and at the time, no amount of plying the development team with requests for accessibility support proved fruitful. this heartbreaking situation is no doubt repeated throughout the community, as the technology landscape seems to widen the so-called digital divide.

Recently, I found myself in a similar position. I was presented with a remote teaching opportunity that, seemingly, I would be unable to accept, thanks to the inaccessibility of the platform being used, one of those mentioned above.

The job requirements included that I not only teach my content, but that I also interact with the students, fielding questions, taking a regular roll call, keeping tabs on who was focused on the presentation screen, as opposed to surfing the web, launching video, using on-screen handouts, and reporting on student activity statistics. As the “host,” or moderator of the class, content producer and presenter, I would be required to manage all these tasks while teaching extended continuing education courses lasting several hours. Aware that the platform already in use by the company with which I was contracted was inaccessible, I hired a consultant to assist me in finding an alternative. I was told that if I could find such an alternative, the job was mine. Otherwise, the job would go to a sighted educator.

The consultant evaluated a half-dozen screen sharing products, from well-known tech brands to blindness-specific conference room chat platforms. If one of the options suited the technical specifications of the company I would be working with, such as attendee size, real-time uptime support, or audio/video quality, it failed on the access piece. If accessibility to any degree was supported, then it seemed to favor the attendee, rather than the presenter. If a platform proved to be usable with a screen reader, it failed to meet my audience management or interactivity requirements. Frustrated beyond belief, I interrogated my consultant friend, demanding to know why there was no accessible platform available. None of his answers were satisfactory on any level. This was not, however, for lack of trying. Accounts were opened, or, borrowed. Developers were contacted. Support tickets and bug reports were submitted. Mock presentations were crafted. Apps were downloaded, remote screen reader control was used, calls to colleagues were made. Finally, he concluded, there was just no accessible solution to be had.

I was livid. I ranted and raved and paced the room while I had him on the phone, railing at the injustice of it all. It was maddening to me that but for an inaccessible video player/launcher, or some such triviality, I would be denied meaningful work. this was totally unacceptable to me. My consultant offered to create a work-around, something that would enable screen sharing that re-routed the audio from my screen reader and video in such a way that the audience could hear one, but not the other. Something about a mixer…a second sound card…I don’t know…I was in a rage fog. “It may be too complicated,” he warned me. “You’ll have to manage all this on the fly. And if it goes down, there’s no one to get you up and running.”

In a fit of fury, I pounded three words into a search engine: Accessible video conferencing. Insert clouds parting, glittering golden rays of sunshine pouring forth while the angels sing an alleluia here.

Enter Zoom. Zoom is the first mainstream accessible screen sharing platform that is robust, mainstream, feature-rich, mainstream, and accessible to both presenter/content originator and attendees. Did I mention it’s mainstream?

This is the solution you’ve been waiting for… this is the answer to the interview question, we use X Y Z product here, and the job requires you give presentations…or demos…or consultations…or product training…or teach classes…or collaborate with team members in a satellite location…does that sound like something you can do?”

Now, with Zoom, the answer can be yes.

The Zoom web site is loaded with lots of what you would expect with regard to features and benefits, but this is what jumped out at me right away: The Accessibility page. I only have three words for you…compliance, compliance, compliance. Zoom is not new, but their accessibility improvements are. From the Zoom web site:

“Zoom is committed to ensuring universal access to our products and services, so that all meeting hosts and participants can have the best experience possible. Zoom’s accessibility features enable users with disabilities to schedule, attend, and participate in Zoom meetings and webinars, view recordings, and access administrative features across our supported devices.”

Here’s the link to the Zoom home page:

Click here to go to Zoom home

Zoom actually has a dedicated accessibility team, and the update notes are logged as recently as February in some cases, and last week in others. Zoom services are compatible with standard screen readers such as VoiceOver on iOS and OSX platforms, TalkBack on Android devices, and NVDA for Windows platforms. Check it out on the Zoom accessibility page:

Apologizing in advance for my use of hyperbole here, this product is revolutionary. For me, it is going to make the difference between being able to do work or not. As with many similar platforms, there are several levels of feature sets, all with tiered pricing, but there is also a free basic level that is better than just a trial version or a limited-time demo. For those of you who have been trying to solve the problem of interviewing multiple people in different locations while recording everyone for a podcast without sounding like one or more of you is talking from the bottom of a trash dumpster, this is your solution. Want to start up a speaking business? Offer classes? Show off your work product without compatibility concerns? The free, basic level lets you interview or screen share/chat with one person with no time limit, or more than one person for 40 minutes. You can record directly from the dashboard. Need to present to 100 attendees? 1000? 5000? You can…for any number of competitive pricing models.

I don’t know who I could contact on the Zoom team to thank them for what amounts to a technological miracle for me, but I am thrilled. And did I mention it’s mainstream?

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, I did apologize to my consultant for yelling.
